ProForm SMART Pro 9000 Review 2020

         Our Rating: 4.8/5

The top-of-the-line option from ProForm, the SMART Pro 9000 is a well-equipped and well-rounded treadmill that won’t leave you wanting more but also won’t break the bank.

Throughout this review, we’ll dive into ProForm’s holistic approach in designing this model and why it deserves to be on the radar of fitness buffs of all experience levels.

Build Quality

When it comes to training, whether it be marathon, cardio in general or body busting HIIT, it is a necessity to find a treadmill that can keep up with your power and strength.

While many fitness companies market their models as fast and capable, there are many components that go into making a treadmill dependably set up for long-lasting success, such as roller size and motor type, that a number of brands skimp on. Thankfully, when it came to the best treadmill they could craft, ProForm took hold of their forward-thinking potential to dream up the SMART Pro 9000.

Confirming that you get to experience the finest ProForm has to offer is the heavy duty drive system, which comes stacked with a 4.0 CHP3 MachZ commercial plus motor. Longevity is at the forefront of this engine system as the heavy duty drive design holds a self-regulatory function and is automatically cooling itself down while in use. The heavy duty drive system’s self-soothing ways also allow for a quieter experience, ensuring your home treadmill is not a huge distraction for other family members.

Making the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill standout more than any other ProForm treadmill is its commercial plus motor, making it all the more sturdier and readily available for your gritty and consistent workouts. Pairing with ProForm’s intention of building a treadmill that won’t quit is the ample roller size this model offers.

A specification you should be paying a great deal of attention to, the 2.5” rollers are balanced with precision via a machine that produces exact measurements. Furthermore, these large rollers are non-flex in order to assure their malleability throughout altering workout stages. Larger treadmill rollers, such as the ones within the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill, are a huge asset as they relieve stress on the treadmill belt as well as reduce motor wear and tear throughout the years.

One of the marks of a well-built treadmill is roller size. For example, potentially the most resilient treadmill you can bring into your home is the Life Fitness Platinum Club Series treadmill, which has 3.5” precision-crowned rollers and a crown worthy high price compared to the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill.

Bringing comfort financially by being well-priced isn’t the only relief the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill provides, as ProShox cushioning lies throughout the deck to curtail joint strain while you activate your body. Turning the SMART Pro 9000 into a red-carpet runway is the 22” x 60” running surface which gives long legs room to stretch out and your elbows space to move about the treadmill cabin without knocking into safety side rails.

Doubling down on their quality-minded design, ProForm goes out of their way to put the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill belt through rigorous testing that includes one million cycles of use with double the user weight. A 300 pound weight capacity accommodates family members of all shapes and sizes.

The ProForm SMART Pro 9000 boasts a slew of hearty features that result in it being a truly trusted treadmill for your home.

Technology

If you thought the build quality of the ProForm SMART Pro 9000 was appealing, wait until you see what it has in store by way of innovative technology. If tech is your thing, you’ve selected the right treadmill to consider.

Making working out a seamless experience is the high definition touchscreen, which, similar to your smartphone, can be navigated by swiping and simple touch. With the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill, you get 10” of high definition vibrancy that is more than ideal to follow iFit workout classes on.

Speaking of which, iFit is a membership model of streaming fitness classes conducted by certified personal trainers. an iFit membership is free for 12 months after purchase, so you get to enjoy 365 days of unlimited access. Should you elect to continue the membership, there is a monthly fee after that, which you can opt out of or back into anytime.

That being said, iFit is not your average streaming workout service. For starters, each membership accommodates four people, granting differing nutrition, sleep and workout recommendations individualized to each profile, which takes account of each person’s workout summaries in order to track progress over time. Adding to this, each workout can contrast greatly depending on what your body is up to for the day.

Furthermore, whether you desire a studio-based setting or an outdoor workout, the options are truly limitless and ideal for those who get bored with workouts easily. iFit doesn’t stop at treadmill activity and rather offers a plethora of fitness courses in categories like yoga, cross-training, weight lifting, hiking and more, making it a great asset if you’re seeking a well-rounded workout routine.

Something truly unique to iFit is the ability for users to travel the world while exercising, all form the comfort of one’s home. With Google Maps technology, you can run through Italian seaside villages such as Cinque Terre, hike through Yosemite, do Yoga on a beach in Thailand or walk through the New Zealand countryside. We love how iFit is ever-changing and growing, continually adding new workouts to try out, giving you something exciting to look forward to each time you step onto your treadmill.

As you pursue tough exercise, ensure your target heart rate is being met through the EKG Grip Heart Rate Sensor2, located on each handlebar. That being said, where the SMART Pro 9000 stands out greatly from the SMART Pro 5000, besides motor strength, is that it provides a wireless chest strap. In fact, the SMART Pro 9000 is the only ProForm model that has a wireless chest strap included. This chest strap is helpful for those who really want to get on the move without having to hold onto anything for heart rate readings, making a totally hands-free workout within reach.

Also making the SMART Pro 9000 different from the other Pro Series treadmills is the integrated accessory tray, which is convenient for easy storage. In addition to the tray, the SMART Pro 9000 also has an adjustable tablet holder—the only ProForm model to offer such—further solidifying this model as the highest end and most convenient option.

When it comes to technology, the ProForm SMART Pro 9000 assures you it can keep up with these futuristic times.

Price Point

While ProForm does a lot really well, one thing we truly appreciate from them is their ability to include advanced technology and high motor power at a more reasonable price than its competitors.

Most comparable to the SMART Pro 9000 is the NordicTrack Commercial 2450, which offers similar performance but comes at a heftier cost. With the added cost, you’ll get bluetooth audio, a 4” larger screen and ten more on-board workout programs. Otherwise, the ProForm SMART Pro 9000 holds the same motor strength, running surface, roller size, iFit ability, cushioning, folding assist, speed, decline and incline range at the NordicTrack Commercial 2450.

Furthermore, the SMART Pro 9000 comes with a wireless chest strap for heart rate monitoring that the NordicTrack Commercial 2450 does not. When comparing the SMART Pro 9000 to the SMART Pro 5000, the 9000’s added cost will get you 0.25 more horsepower, an adjustable tablet holder, and a wireless chest strap not found on the SMART Pro 5000. That being said, SMART Pro 5000 does have a leg up with its built-in bluetooth speakers, as the 9000 speakers are only able to be connected through an auxiliary cord.

If you require up to 100 pounds more weight capacity, desire better warranty coverage, and are willing to forego technology, the Sole F85 is another solid option that costs the same as the SMART Pro 9000. That being said, among the sea of competition, considering its unbelievable technology and durable build, the ProForm SMART Pro 9000 is certainly one of the top options on the market.

Pros and Cons

As we’ve alluded to in previous section, the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill unfortunately doesn’t include bluetooth speakers like the cheaper SMART Pro 5000 and SMART Pro 2000 treadmills do. However, there are still 3” speakers and an audio auxiliary port assuring you can still get your groove on. Another bummer is the lack of lifetime warranty coverage not provided by ProForm.

Nonetheless, when it comes to engineering, ProForm didn’t cut any corners on the SMART Pro 9000. If you’re someone who enjoys hiking, outdoor activity or road running, you’ll greatly appreciate the vast decline to incline range of -3% to 15%. Decline may seem confusing to some, considering traditional treadmill only offer incline capabilities, but having a decline ability is what creates a well-rounded workout that ranges in grade just as the world outside our home does.

As you navigate the varying ups and downs on your treadmill, you can alter your speed according to your energy as the 0-12 mph speed range has your back when it comes to options. What’s more, ProForm tapped into their technology repertoire to ensure fast setting changes between speed, incline and decline while working out, making the SMART Pro 9000 a great home treadmill pick for high intensity interval training.

Placing itself on a pedestal is the motor design of SMART Pro 9000 treadmill, as it’s the only ProForm treadmill that holds a commercial plus motor. The next best ProForm option within the Pro Series is the SMART Pro 5000, which provides a commercial pro motor, not a commercial plus.

Despite its hefty power, the SMART Pro 9000 isn’t looking for a permanent home within your home, as it comes with the ability of easily being stored away; the SpaceSaver Design allows you to keep the treadmill deck upright when not in use. And with EasyLift Assist, lifting the treadmill deck up in order to free up floor space is incredibly simply.

Having access to the iFit workout programming anytime is a great asset that can be taken advantage of whenever you’re ready to move. iFit turns your treadmill into an endless wellness experience through its constant variance, and to be honest, makes working out less of a slog and more enjoyable. Certified professional trainers provide live motivation to you to keep you going, and guide you through your workouts by remotely changing your speed and incline, so all you have to do is show up. Plus, with iFit, you won’t have to be concerned about your treadmill’s technology being up to date as they are constantly uploading new content for you to try, making your activity a truly active, real-time experience.

That being said, if money is tight and you aren’t able to access iFit after the first free year, the 40 onboard workout apps have you covered. Considering traditional treadmills, such as the Life Fitness T5, only provides 14 workout programs, having a variety of 40 workouts at your fingertips is truly beneficial.

Warranty and Guarantee

Unfortunately, motor coverage is non-existent on ProForm treadmills; NordicTrack treadmills are also void of any motor warranty coverage. While the treadmill frame on the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill has 10-years of frame coverage, which is great, other brands, such as Sole Fitness, provide lifetime coverage.

That being said, when it comes to labor and parts, ProForm shows up on behalf of the SMART Pro 9000 treadmill with 2-year parts and 1-year labor warranty, which is much more than what’s commonly found on other treadmill brands.

Granting ease is the incredible customer service ProForm provides, which I have received first-hand. Their customer service team is actively available and responds especially quickly if you contact them via chat through their site. It’s nice to see a company present for its customers the way ProForm is.

Summing Up This Review

Finding a treadmill that is both technologically advanced and well-built with dependable parts at a price that won’t leave you with sticker shock is a difficult task for treadmill consumers.

Whether it be motor power for rigorous workouts, or advanced up-to-date technology for an enjoyable experience, the ProForm SMART Pro 9000 truly does have it all, making it a great option if you’re looking to not settle.
